I am 12 years old and i started bowling for a league in september of 2003 this was my first year on a league and i saw you on some of your games on tv and you are astounding. amazing. there arent words to describe your talent , your gift from god. I was even more pleased to get to shake your hand and get your autograph. I was bit disappointed that I did not get to see you bowl. Do you think that the automatic seed into the super 16 round and bypassing the the earlier rounds was a positive or negative position to be in? I do plan on making another trip next season to watch some round 1 or 2 action. Also, if I bring my Crush/R that I am no longer throwing will you sign it for me? I hope you have a good off season. I can't wait til next season. Randy Hi Randy, Being seeded into the super 16 was an advantage. In a match, the top players are fairly competitive and can beat each other at any time. If you catch me in the future at a tournament and I am not in the middle of a round and I have the time, I will be happy to sign about any autograph within reason. Charles (Chad) March 20, 2004 Chester SC Mr. Williams, I think you have done a superb job in turning around your season for 2003 - 2004 year. I learn a lot from you on how well you come back on a shot after being distracted by a fan. After watching you, I see how important a good mental approach to the game is. It seems when you start your approach and something happens that causes you to stop, you always come back with a strike. Tell PDW that I hope he isn't offended by this, but you are the best. I hope your health stays good and you can continue for years to come. Now, to my question. Actually, it is a request. I feel only one of three people can pull what I am about to ask off. That is you, Rush Limbaugh, or Bill O'Reilly. If possible, can you get a message to the White House and ask if it would be possible for me to bowl at least a game (I would like to bowl a three game series, but at least a game) on the White House lanes. I think they have only one lane, but it will do. Everybody who wants to get better at bowling dreams of being a pro. This would be a dream come true to bowl on the White House lanes. They would listen to big name like yours. Thank You Hi Charles, I don't have any connections with the White House that I know of. I was there in 1989 when 9 world horseshoe pitching champions were invited by the President. I did pitch horseshoes at the White House, but I have not bowled there. It would be quite an honor to bowl there. You might want to try one of your other connections. Chris March 9, 2004 Bound Brook NJ I recently wrote you asking if you knew somebody or heard of them and I realised I got his last name wrong. I'm sorry for the mistake his name is Jim warger he used to bowl on tour 85 and 86,and I was also wondering what your high series is and how manny 300's you have. Thanks alot Chris Hi Chris, I don't remember Jim Warger, but the name sounds vaguely familiar. My high series for 3 games is 857 at a PBA regional tournament in 1982 using a plastic ball. I don't know how many sanctioned 300 games, but it is close to 70. I think that I am up to 63 in PBA competition and I probably have 5 or 6 in ABC competition, which wasn't in the PBA. I haven't bowled in a league since 1982. Mike March 3, 2004 Santa Rosa/Eureka CA He Walter Ray, I wanted to ask you if you remember my mom Betty Hallett. I believe she was secretary at Harbor Lanes when you bowled juniors there. We used to watch you pitch horseshoes at Redwood Acres. My main question is whether or not you will plan to bowl the west coast stops next season. I have yet to make it to see you bowl professionally, but never miss taping the finals on TV and watching each week. Chris February 29, 2004 Bound Brook NJ First let me start off with saying how good I think you are, in my oppinion you are one of the best who have ever played. The fact that you have been in the league this long just shows how well you are able to adjust to the diffrent types of equipment, and lane conditions. Now for my question, I know somebody named Jim McCaroll he used to bowl on the PBA during the 1985, and 1986 season I was just wondering if you have ever heard of him? I was also wondering what do you think the greatest moment of your bowling career was? Thank you for your time I greatly apreciate it. Chris Hi Chris, I don't remember Jim McCaroll, but I don't have the best memory. It is hard to say what my best moment of my bowling career was, but being inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame is right up there. Also any of my National titles, especially the majors. And then Player of the Year is an honor for great bowling in that season. Randy February 24, 2004 Alvin TX Hello Mr. Walter Ray, (I'm 31 years old) I have only been bowling a little over a month (about 100 games), and am averaging 180 pretty consistently over the last 20 games (have broke 200 three times and 219 is my high score). I am addicted to bowling, my wife and I go almost everyday before or after work. I have committed to competing Pro 1 year from now because I want to be that good at it. I don't have a technical question, I have one of enthusiasm I guess. I learned guitar just as fast when I was 15. Within 3 weeks, I was playing just as good as others and could play with any house band within 3 months - but I never got any better than that (and did the same in Tennis and other technical things such as video/audio editing/songwriting). In other words I could win Regionals, but never could compete against the big boys. As for guitar, I love it like I love my brother, but again, I'm still just only as good (really good, but not pro) as I was 3 months after the day I first picked it up. I am afraid to do the same with bowling. In all the fields I have learned, this has been the case. What can I do to prevent this in bowling? Do you know people like this and have you helped someone through this breakthrough? And also, I have never been trained professionally in any sport or anything for that matter, and I wonder if that might help in the case for bowling. I understand how busy you are, and so I thank you in advance for any time you might take to answer any of my many questions. We own your video and you are truly my only inspiration for bowling at this point - I work many hours and don't have much time to catch TV. Thanks again, Randy from Texas Hi Randy, There is a thing called a learning curve. It is much easier to improve when you are first learning something. It normally takes years to become a professional at anything no matter what it is. It may be that you aren't committed to make the slight improvements from good to great that it takes. As a newcomer to bowling, it might be advisable to seek out a bit of coaching so that you don't learn too many bad habits that will be very difficult to change later on. Unfortunately when we learn something at a later age, we are sometimes too stubborn to seek the proper advice. But I think that the main thing is that you have fun and Good Luck. Donald Hi Donald, I do practice, but not that much when I am not on tour. As far as practicing with someone and giving them tips, I don't do that very often. I use a 15 pound ball. 12 pounds might be a lot for you, but if you can handle it, then great. Learn to have a good follow through (reach for the sky) and have lots of fun! I am friends with Norm Duke. He lives about 45 minutes from me and he and our wives will get together for a little friendly competition on the golf course. You gave my daughter your autograph for me when you were in Louisville because I had to have my right eye taken out because of cancer and I couldn't be there. I bowled one year when I was around 12 and then started bowling again when I was 17. I don't have any bowling clinics. I wanted to say I think it is great that you awnser questions for your fans. A lot of people like to know what happens behind the sceens of bowling or how bowlers feel on gameday, and you give us your time too let us know. I Also wanted to say it really irritates me when people trash talk you or pba on your site. You are the only one I know who has a web site dedicated to your fans and these certain people are going to ruin it for the real fans. I also wanted to say I saw on a previous question where someone asked how important the record is to you. You stated it is important but you have a bowled a few years longer (in the pba) than Earl Anthony. I could be wrong and definately no disrespect for Earl he is from my home state, and bowling might not be where it is without him. But I think the competition is a lot tougher now than when Earl was bowling. I am only 23 so I could be wrong, Of course I dont know many bowlers from that era. Steven December 19, 2003 Springfield OR Walter Ray, i have been to a lot of places but not flordia,how is the weather down there you see i'm from oregon.and it always rains or it is always cold.another question i have is in the second half of the season do you think you will have a greater chance of doing well.or do you think that you have open shots at being a major contender.because every time they have a tv match they almost always have a statement that how you did not make the tv shows.do you think why they said that is because the pba players think that you are still a major contender.last year was the greatest year more than everyone has ever seen before.well are answers are a life saver.thank you. Hi Steven, The weather in Florida is normally quite a bit warmer than Oregon, but during the summer it rains quite a bit here and they get about 50 inches of rain per year. I know that some parts of Oregon get nice and warm during the summer, but the winters are normally much nicer in Florida. The average high temperature in Ocala in January is about 70. I am planning on doing better in the 2nd half of this season, but things don't always go the way you want (like the first part of this season). But part of the thing about doing a website is that it takes a lot of work and keeping it fairly updated with new material. I was wearing a long black leather jacket and you had a little hammer bag when you went to practice with Steve Wilson, Dave D'Entremont, I believe the you were with Dale Eagle?, next to you was Chris Barnes, Chris Warren, and many more PBA stars that I just awe struck. I was on the rode to see my family in the snow that weekend. You have responded twice to my questions before and I thank you for that I didn't know what to tell you when you walked by me. I know that you have had a tough year so far so I did not want to make you feel worse than I know you have to feel. I still believe that you are capable of doing great things on the PBA tour. The PBA would not be what it was today if you were not out on tour doing what you do best and that is WIN! Your work ethic and seemingly endless appearances throughout the country should be commended. The PBA will not be the same without you. Zac December 11, 2003 Tahlequah OK Dear Walter Ray, Last summer my brother, his wife, and a couple of friends of ours joined a bowling league. Since joining this league we have become increasingly closer and find bowling as one of our favorite things to do. We arn't very good bowlers, so last summer we have looked to you for inspiration and have even included your name on the back of our uniforms. Many people ask who Walter is, and I just look at them and say, "Only the best bowler in the world." At the end of thes season we ended up being one of the best bowling teams in the league, and next season we are expanding to two teams in the league. A couple of weeks ago one of our teemmates's pregnant wife had compliacations with her pregnancy and was born 6 months prematurely. Since he fights everyday for his life we have decided to induct him as an honorary member of our team on Monday December 15th at the bowling alley.
