Hi. I heard long ago that you had studied physics, and some of us were wondering today whether you'd be interested in talking about bowling and horseshoes and physics with some physics students and others ... after reading the letter and reply below I'm a little pessimistic--but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I'm the new physics instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior this year, and a bowler, too. I think a visit would be a terrific thing for us--would you consider such a thing?

Thanks,
Steve Highland

my daughter is a senior in high school and taking physics. this summer she started bowling and loves it. what type of example in physics can she study, skid, roll and hook? then apply it to her bowling. are there any work books on physics and bowling? sincerely, brent gibb

Motion of the ball as it slides down the lane. If you know your physics you would know that the ball doesn't really skid, roll and hook. The ball actually hooks only when it is skidding. The difference is that when the coefficient of friction increases is when the ball makes a bigger move. When a ball actually rolls like a tire it will no longer hook, as it has rolled out. I don't really apply my knowledge of physics to bowling, but I think it gives me a different perspective on what is happening. I don't know of any books on bowling and physics. Good luck to your daughter and I hope that she has fun.

Hi Steve,
It has been a while since I have studied my physics. I don't know how much of what I could talk about would be 'real physics', but I could discuss generalities of how I view bowling and horseshoes as it relates to bowling.

The main problem is that I live in FL. I do travel around the country, but usually don't have a lot of free time. Also, normally I would like to get some compensation for an appearance. If you are still interested contact us and we can try to set something up. The best thing might be to use this forum. Thanks. I could maybe send you a copy of my thesis and your class(es) could find the errors of my thesis.

Mr Williams,
My name is Jeff Sanders and I am the head tournament director for one of the bigger travel tours in the Greater Pittsburgh Region.

We are the Washington County Youth Leaders Bowlers Tournament which is WCYLBT for short.

I was looking at your diehards catalog and saw the diehards watch and knew when I saw it that it would be the perfect honor score award for my scratch bowlers.

If you would be so kind to donate 1 or 2 of these watches I would place a link to walterray.com on our website and also place the Walter Ray Diehards Logo on our newsletters and flyers which are mailed out to over 45 centers in the Greater Pittsburgh Region.

I hope to be hearing from you soon,
Jeff Sanders
Head TD of the WCYLBT http://www.eteamz.com/wcylbt

Good Luck in 2002-2003

Hi Jeff,
We appreciate your wanting to use our watches as prizes for your events. But at this time we are not doing much advertising. Maybe when I am in the area and if the days work out I can make an appearance at one of your events. Best wishes to everyone in your events.

Walter Ray, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your detailed Regional tournament updates. I pour through them with interest and look so forward for the next updates to appear. My question is that I would also like to begin tracking my pocket hits and the pin results of each frame. I am amazed at how you are able to remember each pin-count detail and would like to know if you have some type of form that helps you? Wouldn't it be great if you could transform whatever form you use into a downloadable software program for Bowlers that we might be able to use on our Palm devices?

Thanks for your help and I look forward to seeing you kick Pete Webers scrawny little butt on National TV! Next time, Parker Bohn WILL go down by Walter Ray and won't bowl the match of his life in the first round!

Jim Jobin, Owner - TheWritersEdge.com

Hi Jim,
Thanks. I use a score sheet which has all of the pins on it. I will see if we can put it on our website so that you can download it for your own use.

I will try to beat whoever I bowl, but it is very difficult to beat all of the players all of the time.

Hi. I have been bowling for about 5-6 years now and I am averageing about 215 now but I am in kinda the worst slump I have ever been in. I went from the typical 200's on a regular basis to scores btween 140-190 all of a sudden. mostly 150-170. I have no idea what the problem could be. It started maybe a month ago after a bowled my first 300 game. Sinse then I seem to not be able to get my bowl to curve like it use to so I am coming up light most the time and sometimes missing the head pin all together. I have tryed slowing my steps but it seems no matter what I try it doesnt work. I used to have a very smooth stroke but lately I feel very uncomfortable and something doesn't feel right like it should. Well anyways, I know you wouldnt be able to figure it out unless you saw it but I was wondering if you might have some pointers on some things I could check on that I might be doing wrong. Well if you could write back I would really appreciate and and thank you for you! r time.
Sicerely Jeremy Jones(a big fan of yours)

Hi Jeremy,
It sounds like maybe the lane conditions changed where you bowl. One of the things about good bowling is to learn how to bowl on different lane conditions. You need to figure out how to get lined up. Even on lanes that have a lot of oil, you must pick a spot which will get you ball to the pocket and hit it. You need to be more accurate to maintain your average on more difficult lane conditions. Also if you aren't playing the lanes correctly then it will be tougher to score well. You might need to ask your local pro to help you out. Maybe a lesson or even a new ball. A lesson might be better. Good luck.

I have recently heard about a Horseshoe game that is played in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is played with 5 real horse bones. I would really like to know what it is called. Let me know if you have any awnsers for me. If not do you know where I could look to find the awnsers that I need.

Thank you for your time.
Dawn Beckwith

Hi Dawn,
I have never heard of any such game. I hope that somebody is playing a bad joke on you, but I guess it is possible. I would look up a website about games played in Saskatchewan.

What is your opinion on the solution to reviving the competition locally? Bowling is on the downturn here in Utah. What would you do to help tournament competition to come back to life. Leagues to me are recreational bowling. There are a couple of hundred scratch bowlers here and you can't even get tournaments going.

What would you do?
We try and nothing works.

Hi Ken,
Scratch leagues are usually very good competition. I am amazed at how many good players do not care to bowl in tournaments. But some people have other things that they like to do.

If you could get a sponsor to help keep the money going into the prize fund that might help, but it sounds like you need somebody who is really good at running tournaments and could get the local players excited about bowling in the tournaments.

I am sorry that I don't have any great solutions for your 'problem'.

Hang in there. Tournament bowling can be fun, but it is much more fun with more players involved.

Hello. Congratulations on being up for an ESPY again this year. I just wondered how you feel about being combined in the category with a woman bowler or do you think it should be a split nomination? Anyway for what it's worth good luck but I think Caroline is going to take home the award. Thanks for listening and have a great summer. Kimmy

Hi Kimmy,
I do feel that there should be a separate category for the female bowlers. And based on our performances of last year I think that Caroline should get the award. But I thought that Norm Duke should have got the award in 2001 for the 2000 season. I wonder how Tiger Woods would feel if Annika Sorenstan was in the Golfer of the Year category with him. Based on their stats from 2001 I would think that she had a better year than he did, but comparing men and women is almost like apples and oranges. Thanks for the wishes.

Just wanted to confirm what I heard, that you wiped everybody out at the Cream of the Crop. Heard that you averaged 255 for 10 or 20 games and the next average was 223. Been around this game over 35 years and in my book you are absolutely right there with the greats of all time, Anthony, Roth, Weber, Carter.

Hi Steve, I didn't exactly wipe everybody out at the Cream of the Crop, but I did bowl very well. I think I averaged a bit over 235 for the 30 total games with Mike Sealy and Tommy Jones right behind me.

Hi Walter,
Have you ever been/bowled in Europe? Would you like to come here if PBA had a tournament in Europe?

Do you think the very best europian amateurs could take part to Euro-PBA tournaments although they are not PBA members? That would probably increase media exposure here.
I don't really expect amateurs to make a big impact but it would be interesting..

Great bowling on regionals!

br, Mikko

Hi Mikko,
I have never been to Europe. If the PBA had a tournament in Europe I would probably come over, but it depends on the details.

I can't say if the European amateurs would take part in a Euro-PBA tournament if they were invited to which I think they would be. It also depends on the formats that they would use as to how well the European players would do. I do believe that the very best amateur players would be able to compete against the top PBA players.

Thanks.

Walter Ray,
Ever since I can remember my father was a bowler. I couldn't wait as a child to get out of the nursery in the bowling alley to watch him. My father loved to bowl, at the time he averaged around 185, but he simply loved the game. And the love of the game is what I believe my father has given me. Now I am 22 years old. I began bowling at the former Super Bowl in Ocala when I was seven. Currently I preside in Gainesville. I average right around 2 even. I have just started rolling in a couple of scratch sweepers. At my first one in Leesburg I was a little nervous, I made the first cut, and made the money I spent back. I bowled in the Ocala 6 sweeper and averaged 214 scratch and placed 11th. I am planning to roll in these two this month. I practice about four to five times a week (non-league) trying to roll many different lines. I would like to ask for your advice about regional tournaments. What can I do to best prepare myself to be competitive. I have a dream of one day being on the pro tour. Maybe I'll get to bowl with you.

Hi Joshua,
It sounds like you are on the right track. Bowl at as many different places and shots as you can find. The one thing that can help you is to bowl at the toughest place you can find or practice on the lanes where "the shot" ISN'T. I will do that quite a bit when I want to practice sharpening my skills.

Bowling in a regional tournament would be great experience and a good start to getting on the tour. Good luck and keep practicing.

Walter Ray,
I was wonder in September what are u doing on 21 and 22 because i am putting a tournament together and i was wondering if you could pass it around at the PBA tour first prize is 10,000 dollars and i was wondering if you could also be able to come to it. It is Pennsylvania and it's at The Palace of Downingtown/ Bowling Palace and it would make me the happiest person in the world if you would be able to pass the word around and entry fee is 175 dollars and i hope to see you there.
Thank you
Raymond E Huffman

Hi Rayond,
Since the tour won't be on until October you might have better luck contacting the players through the PBA's website posting area.

Looking at my schedule right now, I don't think I will be able to attend your tournament in September, but you never know.

Whenever you recap your bowling, you always know what ball your opponent is throwing, what line he uses, and the results of each ball. Do you have someone recording this or do you have keen observation and a terrific memory?

Hi John,
I hardly ever know what ball my opponent is throwing except on certain rare situations. I do watch my opponents bowl a bit, but I am not the true spectator when in a match. Usually I right the scores down (pins left standing) as I am bowling because my memory isn't very good (I get frames mixed up). Sometimes I can use the score sheets which some scorekeeper has recorded for the tournament.

Dear Walter Ray,
Feburary the 24th 2002 I got the chance to bowl with the pros for the first time in my life i had a blast, I beat Ryan shafer 276-241, brian leclair beat me 278-214, paul nichols beat me 266-244 I shot a 734 actual 863 with my handicap from least year. one of the things that I wanted to do in my life was meet you and when I got the chance I was nervous but I am glad that did get my picture taken with you it made me feel alot better. Now for my ?

My dad wants to get his pba card next year so he can bowl in regional events, and someday I hope to get mine but I dont hane the average just yet.I want to know what life is like on the road and on the tour .

thankyou for the picture and autograph
good luck in future events.

Joshua Ray Keene

Hi Joshua,
My wife has written a couple of articles which relate to traveling on the road. They are posted on the website. Click on the blue navigation button that says "A View." I have driven across the U.S. at least 50 times and flown another 20 times. It isn't all glamour being on the road. You are usually away from your family and sometimes the hotels (if you stay in one) start to all look the same. I have enjoyed my time on the road, but it hasn't been without its bumps.

Anybody who wants to become a PBA member must average 200 for 2 consecutive years. Or if they bowl in a PBA tournament as a guest and cash they have the option of joining. I would recommend bowling as a guest first to see how well you do. Contact the PBA for info on the regional tournaments. I am glad that you had fun at the Pro-Am and it sounds like you would have beat me also!

Tyler March 2, 2002

Walter Ray,
If you are bowling in No-Tap, would you suggest playing the same line as what you do for regular. I bowled in a No-Tap last night, my partner got a 279 the last game but I couldn't get it over 210. Our lane condition in Lamberton is more oil in the middle, I tried throwing it through the oil and making it come back from the outside. That worked for a while, but then it all fell apart. Just a question for you.
Tyler

Hi Tyler,
I would play the lanes of a No-Tap event the same as a regular event. My main idea of bowling is to hit the pocket. If you hit the pocket you have a very high percentage of getting at least 9. The only time you might want to alter your original game plan is if you happen to throw a ball which gets you into lots of trouble, such as a big hook ball with little control. Spares are important in both No-Tap and regular bowling formats. Good luck on your next event.

Mr. Williams, Jr.:
Every time I tune in the ESPN PBA matches, there is a nagging question in my mind...why isn't there a Bowling Channel? I'm sure there is enough PBA/ABC footage stored somewhere, plenty of merchandise to hawk, PLENTY of people to give instruction, would definitely give good air time to Regionals, could even have moments of comedy with bowling trick shots, behind the scenes, anything else that deals with bowling. I have absolutely no clue about who to talk to to get this rolling, but I thought I would drop a line to you to hopefully stir some interest.

Hope you make it out to Harvest Park in Brentwood, CA some time.
vj osborne

Hi Victor,
I have forwarded this message to the PBA. They understand that there are many fans of bowling. But from what I understand, the current bowling shows aren't over successful at selling the commercials or else bowling would be on more than 3 hours per week (that includes the PWBA). Hopefully the PBA can get the PBA tour shows to become so successful that they add several hours of PBA competition each week. I don't know that there are enough fans to support a 24 hour bowling TV station, but you never know. What may very well happen is that the PBA progresses to the point of having video on its website which would be similar to a 24 hour bowling TV station. The only downside is that you would need a fast modem to see these videos. It might also cost you a few extra dollars a month to see some of this stuff. I think it would be well worth it, but how many fans would be willing to pay for such extras?

I don't know if they have any plans for us to bowl in Brentwood CA in the near future. We did have a national tournament there not too many years ago and I believe that the Seniors have bowled there many times. The closest that we will to Brentwood is Reno in January.

Comments: My home bowling alley is in dis-repair(Gable House Bowl in Torrance CA). When you hit the pins a lot of the time the pins slide around but do not fall down. I contend the alley's and the pins are shot and need replacing. They tell me to shut up. Who is right? Don't tell me (except that you told them) tell them! (signed) Low Score. (310) 375-8038 141 Via Pasqual, Redobdo Beach CA 90277

Hi Charles,

It is a shame when a bowling center doesn't take care of their place or their customers. It sounds like they have oil on the pin decks if the pins are sliding around. Normally new pins are a little harder to knock down than old pins. We used to bowl a tour event at Gable House, so it is surprising to me that the management would tell you to shut up, but that was many years ago.

Comments: Sorry to bother you guys and this isn't a Walter question but Mark Roth who seems to be representing Hammer in fine fashion just won his 1st senior tour victory. Since Walter is working for the same company I would hope some commentary would be ignited in his senior corner since you aren't that far away from seniority yourself. Thanks, Kim

Hi Kimmy,

I am not sure what you are asking, but Mark Roth was probably the best right handed bowler ever. It doesn't surprise me that he won a tournament already on the Senior tour. I wish him much more success.

Comments: Hi Walter, And Paige. Hope all is well. Still following your career, CONGRATS on your Regional win. Is that 1 million regionals now? HA HA!! Anyways 2 questions. Where can I get a video of the 1997 St. Clair Classic which I consider 1 of your best titles? And those dark brown bowling shoes you used to wear, Who makes them and where can I get a pair? Thanks in advance, Take Care,
rickykingpin........................................

Hi Ricky,

I have won around 16 or 17 regional titles (lost count somewhere). As far as a copy of the '97 St. Clair Classic on video, you could post a message and maybe somebody could make a copy for you. The PBA should have a copy of all the TV shows, but I think they would charge about $35.

Those brown shoes I used to wear were Dexter shoes which Brunswick put out many years ago. For some reason nobody wanted to wear them and they are hard to find. Again, ask on the internet, you might be able to find some.
